Reconstruction, rehabilitation and infrastructure improvements planned in Macomb County

Press Release

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. – The Macomb County Department of Roads (MCDR) announced plans for 2022 construction, which includes more than $80 million in road, bridge and traffic improvements throughout Macomb County.

“I want to credit the efforts of our team at the Department of Roads," said Macomb County Executive Mark A. Hackel. "From major reconstruction to enhancing the safety and efficiency of our roadways, these projects are critical to the ever growing infrastructure needs in our community. We will continue to advocate for additional structural funding from our state and federal partners to ensure the more than $2 billion dollars in road improvements needed across Macomb County are resolved."

The construction program includes 12 primary and local road projects and eight bridges and culverts, in addition to more than 20 asphalt resurfacing and concrete pavement repair projects as part of MCDR’s county-wide pavement preservation program. Three Macomb County bridges were also selected by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) to receive funding for rehabilitation and major improvements in 2022.

Work planned also includes six township residential streets as part of MCDR’s subdivision reconstruction program, which provides funding assistance to townships for residential and subdivision roads. The Department of Roads has multiple maintenance projects and traffic technology and communication network modernizations planned this year.

“We work closely with our state and local municipal partners to provide the public with a quality road and bridge system,” said MCDR Director Bryan Santo. “Through our construction and maintenance programs and community partnerships, Macomb County will see significant work this year that will strengthen and enhance our roads, bridges and transportation network.”

Among work slated for 2022 is the continuation of the multi-year $217 million Innovate Mound project, which will reconstruct approximately nine miles of the Mound Road corridor. The innovations include enhanced connectivity by incorporating state-of-the-art design and smart technology to create a modern corridor. The project will include new pavement, drainage, curbs and approaches, traffic signal optimization, roadway widening, connected vehicle and fiber optic communications technology, enhanced non-motorized facilities, and energy-efficient lighting to create a corridor that will continue to serve the community for decades to come.

Below is a list of primary and local road, bridge and traffic projects that are planned for 2022. Estimated dates are tentative and subject to change. The estimated construction cost for each project includes preliminary engineering to generate design drawings and bid documents, construction engineering and project oversight to maintain a high level of quality control, actual construction costs of materials, labor, and equipment required to build or repair infrastructure.
