Powell Road rehabilitation to start in northern Macomb County

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. – The Macomb County Department of Roads (MCDR) announced that rehabilitation work on Powell Road, from 32 Mile Road to south of the 33 Mile Road intersection, is expected to start in August and is anticipated to be completed by the end of October. Traffic will be maintained throughout the duration of the project, but drivers should expect delays and seek alternate routes when possible.

“Projects like Powell Road are critical to addressing the infrastructure needs of our local communities," said Macomb County Executive Mark A. Hackel. “We will continue to advocate for additional funding from our state and federal partners to ensure the more than $2 billion dollars in road and bridge improvements needed across Macomb County are resolved.”

The Powell Road project is part of more than $80 million in road, bridge and traffic improvements being made throughout Macomb County this year. The rehabilitation project includes pavement milling, base repairs and an asphalt overlay.

“We work closely with our municipal partners to identify local infrastructure priorities and strengthen our transportation system together,” said MCDR Director Bryan Santo. “As part of our continuing effort to improve our roads, bridges and transportation network, there is significant work taking place throughout Macomb County, including Powell Road.”

The $1.9 million project includes more than $1.4 million in federal funding. In partnership with the Village of Romeo, Armada Township and Bruce Township, Macomb County will fund 40% of the remaining project costs while the village and townships sharing the remaining 60% of the project.

“Continued investment and collaboration from all of the stakeholders involved are what make projects like the Powell Road rehabilitation possible,” said Village of Romeo President Christine Malzahn. “Romeo values and appreciates the continued efforts of Bruce and Armada Townships, the Macomb Department of Roads, and the County Executive office in continuing to invest in this area to ensure our economic vitality for generations to come.”

A heavily industrial area, the Powell Road corridor is located near several manufacturing facilities and is one of the busiest roads for truck traffic in northern Macomb County.

“Armada Township looks forward to partnering with our neighboring communities on Powell Road,” said Armada Township Supervisor John Paterek. “We appreciate the work that Macomb County has done to secure federal funding to help make this project a reality. The rehabilitation project will benefit our community and northern Macomb County as a whole.”

In 2019, MCDR resurfaced portions of Powell Road as part of the agency’s pavement preservation program to improve conditions on the road until the federal aid project could be completed in 2022.

“Powell Road is an important asset to Bruce Township and our region,” said Bruce Township Supervisor Mike Fillbrook. “This project demonstrates what local communities, working in partnership with Macomb County and the Department of Roads, can do to further enhance our roadways and infrastructure through collaboration and cooperation.”
