Hayes Road rehabilitation work to start in Macomb County

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. – The Macomb County Department of Roads (MCDR) announced that rehabilitation work on Hayes Road in Clinton Township and Sterling Heights, between 18 Mile Road and Hall Road (M-59), is scheduled to start August 15 and is anticipated to be completed in November.

During construction operations, the road will remain open to thru traffic with lane closures in place and flagging operations to control traffic when necessary. Drivers should expect delays and are encouraged to seek alternate routes when possible.

“Hayes Road is a significant corridor in Macomb County that provides north and south access through Clinton Township and Sterling Heights," said Macomb County Executive Mark A. Hackel. "We will continue to work with our local partners to strengthen our transportation infrastructure and fight for the funding we need to help fix our roads and bridges.”

The $5.3 million Hayes Road project includes more than $3.4 million federal funding. In partnership with Clinton Township and Sterling Heights, Macomb County will fund half of the remaining project costs while the township and city split the other remaining half of the project.

“Macomb County takes a comprehensive approach to managing our transportation network, making strategic investments in our roadways,” said MCDR Director Bryan Santo. “Once the Hayes Road rehabilitation project is complete, motorists will experience a smoother ride with new pavement throughout the corridor, creating a safer and more efficient roadway for all users.”

The rehabilitation of Hayes Road from 18 Mile Road to Hall Road includes pavement milling, base repairs and an asphalt overlay.

“We’re excited to share this good news about the Hayes Road rehabilitation project with our residents. We know getting this particular stretch of roadway repaired has been a concern among many in our community, and having safe streets for our residents is something that is very important to Sterling Heights leadership,” said Sterling Heights Mayor Michael Taylor. “This project is a great example of what can be accomplished through collaboration, and we’re grateful for our partnership with Macomb County Department of Roads.”

With preventative maintenance work taking place on Hayes Road south of 17 Mile Road in 2022 along with future plans for other portions of the corridor, the Department of Roads anticipates having a complete and rehabilitated roadway from 16 Mile Road (Metropolitan Parkway) to Hall Road by the end of 2025.

“It takes solid relationships to manage the high cost of road repairs,” said Clinton Township Supervisor Bob Cannon. “We’re more than happy to partner with Macomb County and Sterling Heights and pay our share to overhaul Hayes Road on Clinton Township’s western border. As a township, we receive no money for roads so our portion of the project comes from our general fund.”

MCDR’s 2022 schedule includes 13 primary and local road projects and 10 bridges and culverts, in addition to 38 asphalt resurfacing and concrete pavement repair projects as part of the Department of Roads county-wide pavement preservation program. Work planned also includes six township residential streets as part of MCDR’s subdivision reconstruction program, which is an application based program that provides funding assistance to townships for subdivision roads. The Department of Roads also has multiple maintenance projects and traffic technology and communication network modernizations planned this year.
