Department of Roads names new county highway engineer

Press Release

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. – The Macomb County Department of Roads (MCDR) has named Scott Wanagat as the new County Highway Engineer for the agency.

“Macomb County roads connect commerce, communities and people,” said Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel. “We will continue to develop a talented and future-focused team at the Department of Roads that will respond to the infrastructure challenges of today and ensure we are positioned to be a leader in transportation networks and next generation mobility.”

Wanagat, who has been with the Department of Roads for nearly nine years as a Project Engineer, will lead MCDR’s Engineering Department. The Macomb County native has more than 20 years of engineering experience and holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Civil Engineering from Purdue University.

“Scott is an integral part of our team and is highly qualified to lead the Engineering Department,” said MCDR Director Bryan Santo. “We’re excited to welcome Scott to the leadership team and we’re confident he will continue to serve our community by providing the highest level of service and delivering quality road and bridge projects.”

The MCDR Engineering Department includes 32 employees. The department is responsible for managing between $60 and $70 million worth of road and bridge construction projects annually. Under the direction of the County Highway Engineer, the engineering staff is responsible for the design and construction engineering of all road and bridge projects under the jurisdiction of MCDR.

Engineering work includes surveying, preparation of plans, specifications and bidding documents for projects, as well as the construction oversight and material testing required during the construction phase of projects. Projects include road reconstruction, road resurfacing, bridge replacement, bridge rehabilitation, and large culvert replacements. The Engineering Department is also responsible for conducting biannual safety inspections of the 224 bridges and structures within the Macomb County road system.

“The core of our Engineering Department are the talented and dedicated engineers, inspectors, and field and support staff,” said County Highway Engineer Scott Wanagat. “I look forward to serving our community and leading the Engineering Department as we continue to strengthen and enhance Macomb County’s infrastructure and transportation network.”

Prior to joining the Department of Roads, Wanagat worked at Spalding DeDecker Associates, Inc. (SDA) for 12 years as part of their Transportation Department including four years as an engineering intern. He lives in Macomb County with his wife Anna and four children, Lucas, Joshua, Mary, and Emma.

MCDR is dedicated to providing the public with a quality county road system, with a focus on safety and convenience for motorists and the community, environmental responsibility, and financial accountability.
