Flat tire stop leads to felony weapons charge

Press Release

Mount Clemens, MI – November 5, 2023, at approximately 1:50AM, Macomb County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) Deputy Cotton observed a vehicle traveling north on North Gratiot in Mount Clemens, at very slow speeds, with its hazards on. Deputy Cotton also heard a loud noise that sounded like a flat tire coming from the vehicle.

Deputy Cotton initiated a traffic stop of the 2015 black, Chevy Impala. After approaching the vehicle, Deputy Cotton observed the driver and two other passengers in the vehicle.

Deputy Cotton observed an open backpack on the floor of the front passenger seat. Passenger Xzavier Spraggins, a 21-year-old male from Detroit, moved his leg and the deputy noticed what appeared to be the rail of an AR style weapon. A Diamondback AR-pistol was found in the backpack, along with a 30-round magazine, and over 40 bullets. Although the pistol was purchased legally, it was unregistered. Additionally, Spraggins does not have a CPL on file.

Spraggins was taken into custody and housed at the Macomb County Jail. He was charged with Weapons – Carrying Concealed, a 5-year felony. He was given an interim bond of $10,000.
