Father Arraigned for Three Year Old Son Shooting Himself with Unsecured Gun

A 27-year-old Eastpointe father was arraigned on Friday, June 21, 2024 in connection with the shooting of his three year old son.

Father Arraigned for Three Year Old Son Shooting Himself with Unsecured Gun

Mount Clemens, MI - A 27-year-old Eastpointe father was arraigned on Friday, June 21, 2024 in connection with the shooting of his three year old son. 

It is alleged that Saturday, June 15, 2024 Demetrius Owens did not have his handgun properly secured when his three year old son shot himself in the hand.  The three year old had surgery on this hand.

Owens was charged with Second Degree Child Abuse, a ten year felony, Safe Storage Firearm Violation - Premise under Individual’s Control Where Minor Present and Inflicted Serious Impairment, a ten year felony, Careless Discharge of a Firearm Causing Injury or Death, a two year felony, and Felony Firearm, a two year mandatory felony.

Demetrius Owens was arraigned in Eastpointe District Court where visiting Judge William Crouchman set bond at  $50,000 cash/surety and upon release Owens must have no firearms, no contact with the crime witness and any minors under 18-years-old and wear a GPS tether.  

A Probable Cause Hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, June 25, 2024 at 8:00am and a Preliminary Exam is scheduled for Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at 1:00pm by Eastpointe District Court Judge Kathleen Galen.

“This is a reminder that gun owners must be responsible and vigilant in safeguarding their weapons. We will hold individuals accountable for not securing their firearms to prevent these tragedies in the future," said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido.
