Limestone, subdivision reconstruction, road, and traffic projects set to begin
MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. – The Macomb County Department of Roads (MCDR) is preparing for road and traffic improvements scheduled for 2023 by sending projects for funding consideration to the Macomb County Board of Commissioners for formal approval at the full board meeting on June 15.
“From maintaining critical infrastructure to enhancing public safety, the Department of Roads works relentlessly to deliver an efficient and reliable traveling experience for all motorists and road users,” said Macomb County Executive Mark A. Hackel. “These projects are a part of our continuing effort to improve Macomb County’s road, bridge and transportation network.”
The projects are a part of the more than $163 million in road, bridge and traffic improvements planned throughout Macomb County this year, including MCDR’s annual limestone, subdivision reconstruction and construction programs as well as traffic and safety improvements.
“We take a comprehensive and strategic approach to managing Macomb County’s transportation assets,” said MCDR Director Bryan Santo. “Through the Department of Roads programs and projects, Macomb County will again see significant work taking place this year.”
To aid townships with gravel roads, MCDR offers an annual limestone program. The Department of Roads covers 90% of the material costs and all labor and equipment costs and townships cover the remaining 10% of material costs. As part of this program, townships select which eligible roads they would like to be graded with three miles of limestone applied to gravel roads in each township annually.
MCDR also provides funding assistance to townships for subdivision streets through the department’s subdivision reconstruction program. It is an application-based cost sharing program with the Department of Roads covering half of the project costs up to $500,000 per project. Based on State Law (Public Act 51 and Public Act 246), road agencies are required to obtain, at a minimum, matching funds from townships or other sources for paving or reconstruction on residential roads under their jurisdiction.
With approval anticipated from the Board of Commissioners, MCDR is sent the following projects for funding consideration:
